Technology is not a new word in human history. If we slice the history into smaller sections, we could easily see how each new invention had impacted its own time and influenced the future. It’s easy to overlook the consequence after hundreds of years, but if we look back with patience like the historians do, we see the proofs as clear as footprints. Steam engine was invented and mankind was able to travel further than horses and sailboats. Jet engine was invented and pushed us further and faster. Electricity was discovered and other than the days became longer, uncountable great inventions have followed this powerful source of energy and completely change human history.
We find power and energy from all sources and ride on it to fulfill the human needs of exploration. Follow the metaphor of exploration, new technology are invented like a pair of new shoes of the time, someone will have to put it on and go somewhere, and for a good chance this new journey with these new shoes will leave a jolly footprint in our history. In a different perspective, each new technology is building new containers for us to create new contents to fill in. Therefore technology finds a usage and a value to stay with history and evolve itself, while an empty container would be unfortunately trashed into the emptiness without a trace, and being forgotten.
It is very true that the technology evolves and replaces itself in a fast speed. In this computing era, now, the wheel is moving fast, and once again, changing the economic structure of the world. The development of computer technology has created many millionaires in the 20th century. Like all of the hi-tech industry leaders gathering here, at this century, when the economic power have been in your hands, the important responsibilities of what we can do and what can be done are as well in your hands…
When mass production find its way into our world, more and more man-power and thoughts were put into factory situations to produce the products for a market share and profit. Somewhere and somehow, we started to lose the sense of identity of each person, and missing the ultimate possibility of a complete human-being. Original ideas were diluted by the overflow material world; strict directions of education were engaged to educate the younger generation with the glory of becoming successful, when success means being rich and famous, and do it fast. As a result, people are very focus on what they were trained at, very persistent on what they are good at… we dig in our work further and deeper. For computer technology, we started chasing speed for efficiency, but now the speed chase has become a duty for the engineers to put out new products in the market to continue the growth of companies. Of course, the drive of being excellence and exploration make us out-lived the expectation and experience of yesterday. And finally we made it – technically advanced, financially successful for now.
So, the Computer technology has been growin g in a storming speed and took over the world’s attention. It’s maybe the first time in mankind’s history a technology has been going ahead almost without time for us to prepare and digest. Even thought it has already totally changed the world’s communication methods, this world of technology has to wait for the public to give life and humanity so it could be functional. The shape of the computer box does not mean anything, but what we can do on a computer and the works come out from it will stay valuable, maybe a story, a song, a picture, and so on.
When we found ourselves somehow disconnected with the human touch, and the idea and confidence of what we can do is running low, we know we may have been missing a few important things for life. In the recent years, many political and industry leaders in the world have noticed this and looking into the solutions. Personally, I think that is what we are facing in Taiwan
As the cultural creative industry has been ann ounced as one of the nation’s development goal to challenge 2008, and seeing (ITRI) Industrial Technology Research Institute forming a creative lab, we see a change in the attitude towards arts and creativities. It signals its time for our industry leaders to invest in arts – as a token of inviting creativities and aesthetics back into our society.
For a long time, we knew culture cann ot be ignored but we have been regarding it as a money pit in term of investment and return in short term. Even we all know by heart, culture is the field we grow on, a foundation, it’s all the creative activities and the appreciation of beauty and quality happen on our land. Without nurturing culture in our society, we will be drying out the wells of future.
Investing in arts is not just about giving money, it means more about putting our technology into creating art works. And it would naturally feedback to the technology by creating a need and value of the technology while it enriches people’s life. Using Hollywood Hollywood
This is something we have not done enough in the past and causing us a hiccough today. We shall really take a deep breath and balance our both hands and the two sides of our brain. In one hand, we have powerful technology development foundation that all of you have put in much effort to build; we have the communication tools and skills, and we have you, who hold the economic power of our society, and you are eager to do more. In the other hand, we have persistent artists crying to create better works, and we have the younger generation who has been breathing the free air and looking for infinite. If we put the two hands together, we could do something that can be heard by the world and make a footprint in history.
Time has erased many records of the past. Now, we can still see traces of the past in museums around the world. Through the paintings and sculptures, we peeked in different time and culture and see what we are made out of. Arts had been created and preserved by the higher class in society, in another word, the people with money. Now is the time that survival is no longer a struggle, human, by nature, other thane extending our territory, we crave for cultural elements. We needs stories, needs music, needs ways to express ourselves, needs ways to communicate among us, and further more, we needs artistic appreciation to secure our needs of becoming a better person. In general, culture is a field, a foundation, and everything about us grows on it. It’s more than arts! I believe culture is a much bigger word, and it includes the history, the time being, and the future, and for sure, technology is a pushing hand in the evolution. But only when the specific technology has humanity concern, and being concern with the humanity, like a pair of comfortable shoes, it will be carried out in depth, and perhaps finds a value and wei ght in history.
The drive of being excellence and exploration make us out-lived the expectation and experience of yesterday. I know this term can be perfectly understood here, because the world of growin g technology depends on. In the 90’s, computer graphics hit Hollywood win g time of computer animation and digital special effects. Obviously, computer animation is a baby by the marriage of animation arts and technology. Artists, in any period of time, are looking for new ways to do thing, a new look to their works.
